The Meridian Dixie Majors opened play in their state tournament at Taylorsville late Saturday night with a convincing 23-6 win over Taylorsville.
Former Kemper Academy standout Wade Whitaker was 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs to lead the offensive onslaught for Meridian, which also got a homer, two singles and two RBIs from ex-Meridian High star Sanduan Dubose.
West Lauderdale product Josh Snider was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, Northeast Lauderdale's Phillip Garrett had two hits and two RBIs and Josh McCarty also had two hits.
Jason Spinks of MHS was the winning pitcher.
Meridian was scheduled to play its second contest of the tourney Sunday night, likely against the Jones County/Laurel team.
HA baseball players honored
Academy Class A state champion Heidelberg Academy had three players receive honors when the All-MPSA Baseball Team was recently announced.
First team picks from Heidelberg are infielder Scott McInnis and utility player Heath Ainsworth.
Making the second team is pitcher Matt Culberson.
Also named to the second team is infielder Drew Powell of Central Academy.
