Leadership that works

The first step in creating continuity in a community's leadership is to identify future leaders. They are frequently in the middle stages of their own careers, perhaps with a little of life's seasoning. Or, they may be just starting out, full of energy and new ideas on how to make their community a better place to live. Or, they may be folks whose careers are winding down, people who can share a whole lifetime of experience with others.
In short, despite what we may have read and heard over the years, leaders are more likely to be made than born to the role.
In that connection, the 2002 class of Leadership Lauderdale is now being formed. Participants will learn not only about community development issues, but also how to examine other social issues, identify problems and how to reach solutions.
The program is sponsored by the East Mississippi Business Development Council, Meridian Community College and the Montgomery Institute. Anyone working or living in Lauderdale County is eligible.
The program does require a commitment of time and effort, but the enlightening aspects of completing the course can be beneficial to both the community and the participant. The point is to build leadership skills that can, in turn, positively influence the community's future.
