STARKVILLE Richard Armstrong of Starkville has been named Mississippi State University's executive director of development. He and his wife, the former Charlotte Ann Burns, are natives of Meridian.
Armstrong will assume his new duties July 30, pending approval by the Institutions of Higher Learning's board of trustees. He replaces Frank A. Shannon, who has accepted a position at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
As director of development, Armstrong will lead MSU's efforts in obtaining private contributions, including constituency-based major fund-raising, planned giving, corporate donations and foundation support.
Armstrong will also become an officer of the MSU Foundation's board of directors. He is the former director of the foundation.
DECATUR Samantha Clark of Meridian has received her general education development diploma during graduation ceremonies at East Central Community College.

JACKSON Ben Risher, an advanced English composition teacher at Meridian High School, and James Mathews, a biology teacher at Northeast Lauderdale High School, attended the Millsaps Advanced Placement Institute held July 8-13.
STARKVILLE Stephanie L. McNeil of Meridian and Lorrie A. Howell of Carthage, both doctoral students in Mississippi State University's school psychology program, will soon begin one-year internships.
McNeil will intern at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.
Howell will intern at The May Institute, a non-profit organization based in Norwood, Mass.
Anthony Chandlee, son of Mark Chandlee and Shirley Mabry, and Matthew Pope, son of Elwin and Lola Pope, have enlisted in the United States Air Force.
After completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas, Chandlee will receive training in the aircraft communications/navigations systems field. He is a 2000 graduate of West Lauderdale High School.
Pope is scheduled for training as a U.S. Air Force controller. He is a 1997 graduate of Southeast High School. Both will earn credits toward an associate's degree in applied sciences through the Community College of the Air Force while in basic training.
