Defending Class 3A Girls State Champion Southeast Lauderdale won its season opener on Tuesday night with a 57-54 victory over Forest.
The Lady Tigers placed four players in double figures in the victory. Samantha Smith led the way with 13 points. Kenitta Cooley and Ebony Moore each had 11. Leslie Ruffin chipped in 10.
Forest was led by Ebonee Leverette with 14 points.
Southeast led 12-7 after one quarter and 26-20 at the half. Forest scored 20 in the third quarter to pull within 45-40 after three quarters.
Southeast will return to action at the Clarkdale Tip-Off Tournament in Clarkdale against Newton County at 6 p.m.
Meridian Girls 60,
West Point 49
The Lady Wildcats used a 10-point scoring spurt early in the third quarter to break open a close game and pick up their first win of the season with a 60-49 road triumph over West Point.
Stephanie Mosely and Valencia Hairston scored 20 points each to lead Meridian High School, now 1-2 on the year. MHS travels to Quitman for a Thursday night game, beginning at 6.
Lamar School Girls 36,
Wayne Academy 28
The Lamar School Lady Raiders won their season basketball opener on Tuesday night beating Wayne Academy 36-28.
Myleia Shirley was the difference maker for Lamar hitting a trio of three-pointers in the second half. She finished with 12 points.
Libby Huff added 10 points and Erin Ready had six.
Wayne Academy was led by Erin Stanley's 16 points.
Lamar got off to a slow start scoring just two points in the opening quarter as Wayne took a 6-2 lead. The Lady Raiders came alive with 12 points in the second to take a 14-11 lead at the break. They extended the lead to 24-19 after three quarters.
In junior high action, the Lamar girls defeated Wayne 28-16 in the ninth grade game. Cheryl Luquire had 11 points and Leigh Phillips chipped in nine. Wayne was led by Sabrina Davis and Brittany Bunch had six points each.
In the seventh and eighth grade game, Lamar won 12-8. Morgan Aley had six points to lead the Lady Raiders.
Meridian Boys 90,
West Point 50
The visiting Wildcats of Meridian High School outscored the Green Wave 43-14 over the second and third quarters to move to 2-0 on the season.
Jamiane Winfield led Meridian with 16 points, while Theo Naylor scored 13, Ricky McMillan 12 and Tony Dunn 10.
Wayne County Boys 81,
Laurel 44
Wayne County smashed Laurel 81-44 in boys basketball action on Tuesday night. The game marked the season opener for Wayne County.
Four War Eagles scored in double digits led by Dietric Slater with a game high 29 points. Steven Ford had 15 followed by Tedrick Rankin with 13 and John Gray had 10.
Laurel was paced by Jermaine Cobbins with 19.
Forest Boys 85,
Southeast Lauderdale 45
The visiting Bearcats jumped out to a 41-18 halftime lead and then continued to build on that advantage in the second half on the way to a 40-point win on Tuesday night.
Charles Rhodes led Forest with 26 points, while Piere Barlow scored 17. Ben Reed fired in 18 to pace the Tigers.
Louisville Boys 54,
Ackerman 28
The Wildcats ran their record to a perfect 4-0 on the year with a handy win over the visiting Indians.
Louisville outscored Ackerman 14-4 in the second quarter and 17-4 in the third to run away with the game. Mario Kirksey led LHS with 22 points, while Andre Coleman hit for 12.
Choctaw Cen. Boys 78,
Kosciusko 64
The visiting Warriors outscored Kosciusko 25-8 in the fourth quarter to take the 14-point win on the road.
Braden Sam led the winners, now 1-0, with 27 points, while Tyler Williamson hit for 15.
Wayne County Girls 71,
Laurel 54
The Lady War Eagles moved to 4-1 on the young season behind 15 points each from Karla Bartee and Natalie Jordan. Candice Bartee tossed in 10.
Wayne County led just 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored homestanding Laurel 24-13 in the second quarter and 19-9 in the third to take the win.
Leake Academy Girls 76,
Winston 48
The Rebelettes of Leake Academy won their first-round game in the East Holmes Invitational by knocking of the Lady Patriots of Winston Academy, 76-48.
Leake led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 39-19 at the half. Lauren Gross led Leake with 33 points, while Kristin Caldwell scored 15. Katie Rose White led the 1-1 Lady Patriots with 24 points.
Choctaw Cen. Girls 61, Kosciusko 36
The Lady Warriors moved to 2-0 on the season with the 25-point win over Kosciusko.
Asha Chickaway pumped in 17 for CCHS, while Deandria Johnson scored 16.
