Date set for Martin Luther King Parade
The Meridian Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee and the city of Meridian will present the third annual Martin Luther King Parade and Celebration on Jan. 21.
The Meridian Martin Luther King Holiday Parade and Celebration is recognized countywide for being among the best organized, most diverse and best attended celebrations each year.
The event is free and open to the public.
The theme is "Reclaiming the Dream."
The parade line up will begin at 10 a.m. at 1019 25th Ave., the Meridian Public School District Office. The parade is scheduled to start at noon.
The parade will follow the same route as the Christmas parade, ending at Dumont Plaza for a commemoration program.
Jackson State University's marching band, "The Sonic Boom of the South," is expected to participate. The Meridian High School band and other bands in the surrounding area also have been invited.
Mayor John Robert Smith and Obie Clark, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will speak.

Meridian Community College's winter graduation ceremony, and associate degree nursing pinning ceremony will be rebroadcast on Comcast Cable Channels 12 and 61 as follows: today, 2 p.m., Channel 12; Monday, 3 p.m., Channel 12, and 7 p.m., Channel 61; Tuesday, 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., Channel 61; Wednesday, noon, Channel 61; Thursday, 10 a.m., Channel 61, and 7 p.m., Channel 12; Friday, 6 p.m., Channel 61; Dec. 31, 7 p.m., Channel 12 and Channel 61.
NAMI to conduct education classes
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Mississippi will offer free education classes beginning in January for family members of people with schizophrenia, manic depression, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorder. The 12-class course offers illness information, medication review, communication and coping skills, self-care/support and services.
