If Dajaun Wagner decides to stay in school at the University of Memphis, look for coach John Calipari to have one of the nation's finest one-two punches.
That's because Calipari has already landed one of the top big-man shooters in the junior college ranks in 6-foot-9 sophomore Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.
Woods scored 40 points Monday night in a 73-66 win over East Mississippi at Keyes Currie Coliseum in Scooba. He was 11-of-18 from the floor and 15-of-21 from the foul line.
Most of his makes came on 12-to-17 foot jump shots. It was enough to make an impression on NBA scout Ron Miekle of the Golden State Warriors.
Woods had as many as 16 NBA scouts show up for his last game at Booneville. Woods signed early with Memphis. He says he is still headed to Memphis.
For the season, he has made 54.7 percent of his field goal attempts and is a 79 percent (154 of 195) free throw shooter.
And what about Wagner.

SW women snap streak
The Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears snapped Copiah-Lincoln's unbeaten season with a 68-64 loss on Jan. 28 at Summit.
Southwest's success over the eighth-ranked Lady Wolves didn't last long as the Lady Bears lost 58-55 to Jones in their next outing.
The up-and-down scenario continued Monday when Southwest ripped new South Division leader Pearl River 90-52.

Alonza paces East
ReShard Alonza, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward out of Atlanta, Ga., is the leading scorer and rebounder for the East Mississippi Lions.
Alonza, who is drawing plenty of looks, is averaging 13 points and 8.9 rebounds for the coach Clay Armstrong's team. He had 12 points and 15 rebounds in Monday night's loss to Northeast Mississippi.
The team's second leading scorer is Dennis Dupre at 11.9 points. Dupre is the team's top assist man with 5.9 per game.

ICC men suffer first league loss
The Indians of Itawamba Community College took the North Division men's lead into Thursday's league game with Holmes at Goodman only to leave town tied for first place with the Bulldogs after Holmes posted a 60-59 win.
ICC and Holmes were both 6-1 in the North Division entering this week's games and were 1-1 against each other.
The North men's regular season champion will host the MACJC state tournament, Feb. 25-28.

Lee talking big at Gulf Coast
Recently-named Gulf Coast Community College head football coach Bill Lee expects big things at the Perkinston school.
Gulf Coast's last appearance in the MACJC State Playoffs was 1986.

Kimble knows Goodman
Holmes Community College men's basketball coach Todd Kimble is very familiar with the town of Goodman where Holmes is located.
Kimble has lived in Goodman for 30 of his 32 years. Now in his fourth year as men's basketball coach, Kimble is more than a little familiar with Holmes Community College as well.
He is the son of long-time staff members Jo and Bennie Kimble, who retired in May 1996. Todd now follows in both their footsteps.
Bennie Kimble coached the Bulldog basketball teams for 26 years. Todd Kimble also teaches some math courses, as his mother did for 25 years on the Goodman campus.
Todd also suited up as a member of the Holmes basketball squad before moving on to Delta State University.

NW loses coordinator
For the third time in five seasons, Northwest Mississippi Community College is looking for a defensive coordinator for the Ranger football team.
Craig Jersid has left Northwest after three seasons to become defensive coordinator and assistant athletic director at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

Northeast softball inks trio
Northeast Mississippi Community College softball coach David Carnell has signed three players for the 2003 season.
They are Staranna Frazier and Mallory Sanford of W.P. Daniel in New Albany and Heather Nails of Kossuth.
Frazier, a shortstop/outfielder, was The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Player of the Year in 2000 for slow-pitch softball.
Sanford, a second baseman, batted .534 last season with 16 doubles, three triples and only seven strikeouts in 86 at-bats in fast-pitch.
Nails, a shortstop, had a .405 average with four doubles, two triples, and three home runs. She stole 20 bases in 21 attempts and had an .838 fielding percentage.
