Amber Nicole Philhours is the recipient of the Gloria Nuckolls Memorial Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College. The $1,200 scholarship, funded through the MCC Foundation, is awarded to a student in the health field.
Philhours is a sophomore in the Dental Hygiene Program. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Gamma Delta, Health Occupation Students of America, and the National Honor Choir.
She is involved in the community with the Humane Society, American Red Cross and Northcrest Baptist Church. Philhours is a part-time employee of Jonesboro Surgical Associates.
Anna Lucas has been selected as the 2002-2003 Meridian Exchange Club-Bo Russell Scholarship recipient at Meridian Community College for the fall and spring semesters. The two-year scholarship, which covers tuition and required books, is funded through the MCC Foundation.
An honor roll student, Lucas is a graduate of Meridian High School. She was a member of the Anchor Club, Art Club and the Dusty Social Service Club. Lucas is also involved in civic activities including Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army Christmas food distribution.
Cheryl Johnson is the 2002-2003 recipient of the Jacob Toney Memorial Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College. The $1,200 scholarship is funded through the MCC Foundation. Mrs. Ree Ree Toney of Quitman established the scholarship designated for a Clarke County resident.
A sophomore from Quitman, Johnson is pursuing a degree in business and office technology. She is a member of Phi Beta Lambda. She is also a member of Hopewell Methodist Church and Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department. She works part-time at Riley Hospital.
JACKSON Laura Bardwell King of Meridian has been awarded a Second Century Scholarship from Millsaps College.
The Second Century Scholarships recognize students with extraordinary academic promise who will enhance the quality of academic and student life by their presence in the classroom, on campus and in residence halls.
Recipients are chosen based on academic performance in college preparatory courses, extracurricular achievements and standardized test scores.
A 2002 graduate of Meridian High School, King is the daughter of Raymond and Carron King of Meridian.
Lavonia Y. Winford is the 2002-2003 Ralph Wilkerson Social Science Scholarship recipient for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College. The $600 scholarship is funded through the MCC Foundation.
Winford is a graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School.
A sophomore in the University Transfer Program, she is pursuing a degree in psychology. Lavonia is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international scholastic society for two-year colleges.
Jacie M. Bridges of Meridian was a recent cum laude graduate from the University of West Alabama with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.
Commencement exercises were May 4 in Pruitt Hall.
While at West Alabama, Bridges was a member of the UWA Dance Team, a member of Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society, Alpha Chi Honor Society, Order of Omega Honor Society and Cardinal Key Honor Society.
She also was a president's list scholar and a dean's list scholar. She was a member of Alpha Tau Social Sorority and held positions of recording secretary, social chairman, and chaplain for the pledge class.
She was also Delta Chi Sweetheart in 2000-2001.
Bridges is a 1998 highest honors graduate of Meridian High School and is the daughter of Tom and Pat Bridges of Meridian.
She has accepted a teaching position with the Newton County Schools in Georgia. She will begin her teaching career as a pre-kindergarten teacher at Oak Hill Elementary School in Covington, Ga.
JACKSON Jennifer S. Lee recently received a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Mississippi College School of Law. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Mississippi State University. She is the daughter of Gordon and Jackie Smith of Collinsville. She and her husband Michael, live in Flowood.
