In a game that lasted three-plus hours and had 81 points scored, it was a play by the Northeast Lauderdale defense that finally settled the cross-county feud here at the Trojan Field before a capacity crowd on Friday night. Defensive end Marcus Brown sacked West Lauderdale's C.J. Fountain for a 10-yard loss on a fourth down on the Trojan 12 with four seconds left. The play preserved Northeast's 44-37 win over the Knights. The bitterly fought contest handed the victors a 3-0 record. West Lauderdale falls to 2-1.
LOUISVILLE Once Meridian and Louisville got into the flow Friday night, they turned in a pretty decent performance at R.E. Hinze Stadium with the Wildcats taking a 21-13 victory. Both traditional powers entered the contest with uncharacteristic 0-2 records and showed why in the early going. Louisville shut Meridian down completely in the first quarter as the M-Cats managed just 12 yards on six plays. Louisville fared only a little better as 16 plays netted 54 yards. Both teams finally got going late in the second quarter.

Meridian Community College freshman Chad Monsour scored on an assist from Chad Wade with 3:10 gone in the first overtime period Sunday afternoon to lift the 10th ranked Eagles to a thrilling 1-0 win against the Tyler (Tex.) Junior College Apaches in the Rush/MCC Soccer Invitational at MCC. With the win, the Eagles remain undefeated at 5-0. In the five games MCC has played, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 23-1. Along the way, MCC has recorded four shutouts. In the Rush/MCC Soccer Invitational Tournament, the Eagles defeated Brevard (N.C.) Community College 2-1 Friday night to record the 50th win in the school's soccer program.
Robert Sanford needed every ounce of his four-stroke edge heading into the final round of the Briarwood Men's Club Championships Sunday afternoon. Sanford, who struggled for much of the day, managed to hold off a strong closing bid by Joey Mabry to win the title by one stroke. Incredibly, he had only two birdies the entire round, while Mabry had a hot hand and finished shooting a 33 on the back nine to end 2-under -par for the day. Sanford finished the championship at 4-under-par 140 after Sunday's final round of 1-over 73.

CLEVELAND Very few quarterbacks can make you nervous when they're three points down, 84 yards away, with a minute left in the game. Joe Montana comes to mind. John Elway. And of course, Dan Marino. After the Miami Dolphins blew a 20-3 fourth-quarter lead Monday night, Marino hit four quick passes on an 84-yard, 68-second drive that beat the Cleveland Browns 27-23. Mark Higgs finished it off by diving over from 1 yard out with seven second remaining. It the 19th time Marino had brought the Dolphins back from a fourth-quarter deficit.
