The local United Way chapter kicked off its annual fund-raising campaign today with more than 30 percent of its $800,000 goal already realized thanks to its Pace-Setter campaign.
Louis Sutton, president and chief professional officer of the United Way of East Mississippi, announced that the organization has received $240,197 in pledges and contributions.
The announcement was made at the Annual United Way Campaign Kick-Off Breakfast at Kahlmus Auditorium on the Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus.
Pace-Setter companies began their fund-raising campaigns more than a month ago, acquiring employee contributions to give this year's United Way overall campaign a head start.
Sutton said the next step is for employee campaigns to begin at other companies. United Way volunteers, staff and agency directors will schedule presentations to encourage employee contributions.
This year's Pace-Setter companies are: Alliance Health Center; Boeing Co.; Citizens National Bank; Dillard's; East Mississippi Correctional Facility; J.C. Penney; Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center; Meridian Coca-Cola Bottling Co.; The Mitchell Companies; and Mississippi Power Co..
Last year United Way of East Mississippi raised $765,000 for its agencies.
