When golf becomes a six-player team sport, it's a given the scored are going to be low. It's only a question of how low they will go.
Playing the morning round at the Buddy McGhee Tournament at Briarwood Country Club Saturday, the team of David Hopper, Judge Little, Tommy Little, Randy Poole, Chuck Rea, and John Rea combined for a sizzling 21-under par 51.
As good as that score is, the team of Jon Hamm, Tony Nelson, Jeff Rainey, Kevin Stone, Frankie Wagner, and Marcus Willis is just one stroke back after shooting a first-round 52.
Two strokes off the pace with an opening-day 53 is the team of Rodney Scarborough, Sammy Broadhead, Mac Barnes, Paul Entrekin, Rusty Perkins, and Herb Bruister.
Four teams shot 18-under par 54s in Saturday's action. Reed Davis, Austin Holmes, Shea McGhee, Nathan Myatt, Winston Powell, and J.T. Williamson made up one of those.
Also shooting 54 was the team comprised of Larry Williams, Danny Pressley, Ty Hinson, Grady Hinson, Matt Hutchinson, and Ron Grantham.
Randy Blass, David Hoffman, Laura Hoffman, Robert Frazier, Willie Frazier, and Lambert Irby also fired a 54 over the first 18 holes.
Don Bounds, Benji Carpenter, Kim Eubanks, Shaun Eubanks, Al Tynes, and Jason Anders are also in the four-way tie at 54.
The Little, Rea, Hopper, and Poole team feasted on the par-5s in taking their one-stroke lead. On the four par-5s, the team was seven strokes under par, getting eagles on Nos. 4, 8, and 15 to go with a birdie on No. 12.
The leaders also had birdies on each of the other 14 holes.
The Hamm, Nelson, Rainey, Stone, Wagner, and Ellis team had three eagles Nos. 1, 4, and 12. They came away with birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
The Scarborough, Broadhead, Barnes, Entrekin, Perkins, and Bruister team shot a 53. They had two eagles, Nos. 10 and 12, and birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18.
Play resumes this morning at 8:30 a.m.
