Cavenaugh's two homers lead Lady Cougars to win

Joy Cavenaugh ripped two home runs to lead the Newton County Lady Cougars over Clarkdale 7-2 in slow-pitch softball action Tuesday night at Clarkdale.
Newton County played well and got good production from the heart of the order to pick up the win between area powers.
Cavenaugh, Jennifer Smith and Dominique Mapp, the heart of the order, went 9-for-11 for the night to help the Lady Cougars pick up the win and improve to 4-1.
Clarkdale, playing without a couple of players due to illness, ended the night with just 11 total hits.
Clarkdale scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Potate singled to start the inning and later scored on a single by Lindsey Dawkins.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead, with a run in the third inning. Kimbo Seale singled and Emily Howard came through with an RBI single later in the inning.
Newton County came back with three runs in the fourth inning. Megan Munn singled and Cavenaugh ripped her first home run over the center-field wall to tie the game.
Smith followed with a single and later scored on a walk by Lindsey Stevens to give Newton County a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Cougars added a run in the fifth inning on a single by Smith and scored a run in the sixth inning. Lorna Blackburn doubled to start the sixth and scored on a single by Stevens.
Cavenaugh came through with her second two-run homer of the game in the seventh inning to give Newton County a five-run lead and the Lady Cougars held on for the win.
In junior varsity action, Clarkdale came back in its final at bat to take a 6-5 win over the Lady Cougars.
Newton County will play on Thursday at Forest before coming home for its first home game of the year. The Lady Cougars will be playing Neshoba Central.
Clarkdale drops to 4-3 for the season with the loss and will be back in action on Friday and Saturday in the Kossuth tournament.
