Long day at state slow-pitch softball tourneys

Two slow-pitch softball state tournaments, an under-12 and under-14, were held at the Sammie Davidson Complex Saturday.
The games began at 8 a.m. and the final contest got started around 9 p.m. making for a long hot day for many players, coaches, parents and tournament organizers.
In 12-year-old action, Lawrence County defeated Grenada Recreation 16-9; Petal defeated Nettleton Wheel City 14-10; Brats with Bats got a forfeit win over Picayune; and Noxubee-Kemper defeated Barnes Quick Stop 12-8 in the first games of the day.
In the winner's bracket, Lawrence County defeated Columbus 12-7; McComb took down Petal 17-5; Brats with Bats whipped Myrtle 19-2; and Tri-County squeaked by Noxubee-Kemper 11-10.
In round three of the winner's bracket, McComb defeated Lawrence County 11-4; Brats with Bats took down Tri County 12-9; and McComb defeated Brats with Bats 11-6 to get to the championship game.
In the loser's bracket, Columbus got a forfeit win over Picayune; Barnes Quick Stop escaped Petal 12-11; Myrtle squeezed by Grenada Recreation 10-9; and Noxubee-Kember whipped Nettleton Wheel City 16-1.
Round two of the loser's bracket had Barnes Quick Stop winning over Columbus 12-10; and Noxubee-Kemper defeated Myrtle 12-4.
In round three, Tri County defeated Barnes 10-8; and Lawerence County continued their run through the loser's bracket by defeating Noxubee-Kemper.
Lawerence County kept its run going as the squad defeated Tri County 11-6 and Brats with Bats 14-9.
In a rematch contest from the 13th game of the day, Lawerence County needed to defeat McComb twice to win the state championship.
Lawerence County got the first win, avenging an earlier 8-5 loss. McComb became state champions as they whipped Lawerence County in the finale 15-2.
In 14-year-old action, the Clarksdale Sluggers defeated Houston 8-3; the Arkabutla Rebels got by the Magee Vipers 11-8; and Booneville eased out a 6-5 win over the Bassfield Angels.
In the winner's bracket, Clarksdale defeated Grenada 3-1; and the Arkabutla Rebels whipped Booneville 16-4.
Clarksdale advanced to the championship game by defeating Arkabutla 16-0.
In loser's bracket action, Bassfield Angels got by Magee Vipers 9-8; Grenada defeated the Bassfield Angels 6-5; Booneville got by Houston 12-9.
Grenada continued their run in the loser's bracket with wins over Booneville and Arkabutla to set up a rematch with Clarksdale to determine the champion.
Grenada needed to defeat Clarksdale twice to become champion. Results from the championship game were not available at press time.
