Meridian High teacher arrested

Ernest Smith, 75, a chemistry teacher at Meridian High School, appeared voluntarily at the police station Friday after learning a warrant for his arrest had been issued.
The charge was possession of a firearm on educational property.
Detective M.J. Hoadley of the Meridian Police Department said the incident occurred Sept. 2 at Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus.
According to Hoadley, Smith was driving by the school when he witnessed an altercation between several juveniles. Smith allegedly followed them onto campus, where he displayed a firearm.
Meridian police were notified and Smith was still on the scene when officers responded.
Smith is currently free on a $2,500 bond. No court date has been set.
