Rain halts NCC-BCC match play

A change in playing format was coupled by a drastic change in weather conditions on the final day of Briarwood's and Northwood's second annual match play tournament.
After playing two-man match play on Saturday, golfers from the two country clubs went head to head in match play on Sunday.
But heavy rain just before 5 p.m. forced the cancellation of the two-day tournament's final day with 12 of the 18 matchups still undecided.
Northwood entered the day trailing Briarwood 12-6 as the golfers hit the links in the afternoon for one-on-one play, with each win counting for one point.
The golfers from Northwood took advantage of playing on their home course early, with Northwood winning four of the six match ups that finished before the rain started.
The rain prematurely ended a day of golf that was going to result in a very close finish.
Of the 12 matches still going on, Northwood golfers held leads in seven. Briarwood held a slight lead of 14-10, with club member golfers Ron Posey and Mac Barnes each winning their matches against Northwood's David Larkin and David Ray.
Sidney Bowers, Dennis Foster, Eddie Brown and Scott Morgan each won their match ups for Northwood defeating Briarwood's A.J. Wedgeworth, George Polizzi, Jonathan Winstead and Kevin Stone.
Because the final round could not be finished, Briarwood retained the tournament's cup by virtue of winning last year.
While golfers were disappointed by being unable to finish the tourney, Barnes said the two-day event was fun for members of both clubs.
If all of the golfers leading in their matches would have won, Briarwood would have edged out Northwood 19-17.
