The city of Meridian's church and commercial softball leagues will begin their 2004 regular season during the first week of May.
Charlie Turner of the city recreation department reports that more than 60 teams are entered in the men's and co-ed leagues: 35 men and 27 co-eds.
Meanwhile, some area youth softball traveling teams are gearing up for the summer schedule with the Hattiesburg Invitational kicking things off this weekend. Teams from West Lauderdale, Clarke and Newton counties are entered. All area traveling teams entering this tournament are asked to report their scores to Steve Swogetinsky at 776-6102.
Volleyball season winding down
The Pine Grove Thumpers have won first place in the youth division of the city recreation department's volleyball league with a win over the Choctaw Youth.
Quick completes Boston Marathon
Meridian's Jim Quick finished the Boston Marathon Monday with a time of 4:28.43. Quick, 53, has been training for the past couple of months for the event.
According to the Boston Marathon website, he was the 13,227th person to complete the race, the 8,555th male, and the 1,610 in his age group.
The race statistics are as follows: Entered: 20,344; started: 17,950; finished: 16,743. Timothy Cherigat of Kenya finished first with a time of 2:10:37.
Bonita Classic 5K set for May 1
The Bonita Classic 5K run is set for Saturday, May 1, at Bonita Lakes.
The 5K race starts at 8 a.m., followed by a 2 Mile Walk and Fun Run at 9 a.m.
