Today's semifinals of the Bill Davis Fourth of July Tournament championship flight were determined Sunday morning at Northwood Country Club with two former champions and a pair of newcomers advancing to the final four.
Joel Nelson and Jay Bowen, the 2000 champions, defeated Earl Aycock and Steve Stewart, 3 and 2. Kelly Swain and Scott Morgan, the 2001 co-champions, eliminated Colton Tisdale and Billy McWilliams, 4 and 3.
Bo Welch and Joe Rush Jr. sent 2002 champions Judge Little and Doyle Bryan packing with a 1-up match that took nearly four and half hours to complete.
In the other quarterfinal, Eddie Brown and Chuck Gordon cruised past John Rea and Winston Powell, 5 and 4.
The semifinals were slated to get under way at 8:30 a.m. today with the finals scheduled for 1 p.m.
The match between Welch and Rush and Little and Bryan went 18 holes before Welch and Rush closed it out.
Nelson and Bowen needed 16 holes to win their match over Stewart and Aycock.
Swain and Morgan took 15 holes to dispose of Tisdale and McWilliams.
Brown and Gordon ended their match after 14 holes.
