The students at West Elementary and Russellville Elementary collected nearly 5,000 cans of food during their Food for Flix competition.
Drive organizer Ashley Morrow said this is the first year that Good Samaritan Hospice has sponsored the food drive, but it definitely won't be the last.
"This was a huge success thanks to the students and their parents," Morrow said. "We collected almost five times the amount collected during the school's drive last year."
Morrow added that the students collected 4,680 cans of food over a three-week period. The food was taken to the Faith Mission Outreach in Russellville.
Grades K-five participated in the contest to see which class could raise the most cans. The winner of the contest received an afternoon filled with movies, pizza, popcorn and candy.
West Elementary Principal Ramona Robinson said even though her students did not win, they would be treated with a movie and popcorn as well.
"They all worked so hard to earn this," Robinson said. "We are proud of their effort."
The winners were Miss Akin's, Mrs. Bailey's and Mrs. Balding's classes.
Star 94 FM, Images 2 and Presscraft joined Good Samaritan Hospice in sponsoring the event.
Last Friday volunteers from the Mission came to the school to collect the food, and radio personality FATGUY from Star 94 in Huntsville announced the winners.
The winning classes received trophies donated by Presscraft for the their work as well as Food for Flix t-shirts.
Mission director Matthew Mangino said the food couldn't have come at a better time and that hundreds of families will be fed by the generocity of the students at the schools.
