Ole Miss has links with RHS

HOOVER — Russellville High School had a strong presence at SEC Media Days from the Ole Miss Rebels.

Former Golden Tiger — and son of former coach Perry Swindall — Evan Swindall has a good shot at starting this fall according to Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt.

“At the end of the first week (of spring practice) I asked (Swindall) how it went,” Nutt said. “He said, ‘Well, coach, are all the nose guards in the SEC as big as Jerrell Powe?’ I told him pretty much and to keep his head up and keep going. Towards the end we got some plays going where Powe wasn’t in the backfield every day.”

Kentrell Lockett, who was named the 2010 recipient of the Chucky Mullins Courage Award, also attended media days.

Although he did not know about Mullins’ legacy at Ole Miss before signing with the Rebels, he quickly learned.

“I saw how important he was to the community and program,” Lockett said. “It is an honor to be respected enough to receive the award.”
