PCHS students working on cookbook
PHIL CAMPBELL- Phil Campbell High School will soon be celebrating 100 years as a school and in honor of that feat a centennial cookbook is being put together highlighting old photographs and recipes.
PCHS Family and Consumer Science teacher Amy Gunderman encourages alumni and former students of the school system to help contribute to the cause.
“We have done a cookbook in the past and it got a tremendous amount of good feedback from the project,” she said. “This year we plan to tie in old photos to celebrate our 100 years as a school.”
Gunderman said she has received some emails and has assigned her students to go out and get recipes to fill the book.
Gunderman hopes to also reach those who do not live in the area anymore, but attended the school at some point in time.
“Anyone who has ever had a connection with Phil Campbell High such as former lunchroom ladies, students or faculty are encouraged to send their old photos and favorite recipes along with the year they were connected with the school,” she said. “Over the years, the original school has burned down once or twice and a lot of the old photos were lost and that is why I am asking for help because I want to fill the book with as much historical references of the school system as possible to celebrate its centennial.”
Gunderman said the deadline for submission is set for September 15 because it usually takes two months before the book can get published and she would like to have them in before Christmas.
Gunderman hopes to have them available for purchase by Dec. 1 and expects the cost to be around $10 to $15 a book depending on the cost to print the book.
Gunderman said all proceeds will go towards some “much-needed” remodeling at the Family and Consumer Science building.
“We plan on using the money to refurbish the original flooring, tables and chairs located inside,” she said. “Hopefully we will get enough old photos to where we can have them framed and hang them in the room dedicating that room to Phil Campbell High history.”
