Phil Campbell rolls in Belgreen

BELGREEN — Belgreen opened up its basketball season Monday night at home against Belgreen, but the Bulldogs were unable to give the home fans much to cheer for.

Of the four games played, Phil Campbell was victorious in three of the contests, including both varsity games.

Phil Campbell 39, Belgreen 38

The Bobcats got off to a strong start, building an 11-6 lead by the end of the first quarter in varsity boys action. Belgreen was unable to chip away at the lead throughout the second and third quarters before mounting a furious comeback in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs outscored Phil Campbell 14-7 in the fourth quarter and had an opportunity to take the lead in the closing seconds, but was unable to convert.

Ben Stancil led Phil Campbell with 14 points while Criag Saint added eight points. Also scoring for the Bobcats were Skeeter Benford (7), Colton Vickery (4), Cameron Harris (2), Chase Swinney (2) and Jeremy Reed (2).

Jake Tittle scored a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs. Josh DeVaney added eight points while Tyler Medina scored five. Also scoring for Belgreen were Chaney Simmons (3), Dustin Smith (1) and Brock Hester (1).

Phil Campbell 54, Belgreen 45

The Lady Bulldogs built an 8-1 lead early in the first quarter before Phil Campbell’s varsity girls found their offensive rhythm to take an 18-11 lead by the end of the quarter.

Belgreen was able to pull within four points by halftime, but the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bulldogs 22-13 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

Hope Cook scored a game-high 22 points — 19 of which came in the first half — for Phil Campbell while Ciara Harville and Autumn Thomas added nine points each. Also scoring for the Lady Bobcats were Madison Hardy (7), Sarah Hilliard (3), Ashley Baker (2) and Whitley Yocom (2).

Laken Bragwell led the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points while Erica Smith added 11 points. Also scoring for Belgreen were Lauren Oliver (4), Haley Simmons (4), Bridget Thompson (3), Allison Bragwell (3) and Hannah Taylor (1).

Phil Campbell 41, Belgreen 22

Phil Campbell’s B-Team boys squad took control of the game early and never looked back as the Bobcats built a 24-10 halftime lead.

Austin Jones scored a game-high 19 points for the Bobcats while Bailey Motes added 11 points. Also scoring for Phil Campbell were Bradey Whitten (4), Jacob Ayers (3), Tommy Reed (2), Nathan Duncan (2) and Johnny Strickland (2).

Franky Wallace led Belgreen with six points while Ben Inman added five points. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Nathan Hale (4), Nathaniel Fisher (3) and Hugo Castillo (3).

Belgreen 22, Phil Campbell 21

The Belgreen 9th-grade girls team withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by Phil Campbell to hang on for a close victory.

Mollie Hester and Nicole Borden led the Lady Bulldogs with five points each. Also scoring for Belgreen were Emma Riley (4), Brooke Williams (4), Alanis Welch (2) and Hannah Taylor (2).

Kaylie Ayers scored a game-high 10 points for Phil Campbell. Also scoring for the Lady Bobcats were Leah Gunderman (4), Cassidy Karr (3), Katelyn Vickery (2) and Kelsey Bullock (2).
