City man accused of theft

A Russellville man was arrested on Monday after video surveillance showed him stealing money over the weekend from the cash box at a local business, officials said.
Charlie Douglas Nelson, 26, Stone Crest Apartments, Apt. 203, Russellville, was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, but Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said additional charges will be added when the case is presented to grand jury.
According to Hargett, a local businessman filed a report on Monday stating that he had noticed money missing from his business for the past couple of months.
Hargett said the businessman became increasingly concerned and feared one of his employees was stealing from him so he set up a surveillance camera.
Police investigator Lt. Scotty Lowery said the man discovered footage on the camera from Friday night showing Nelson enter the business and steal cash out of his desk drawer.
“Once he turned the video into authorities, we obtained search warrants for Mr. Nelson’s residence,” Lowery said.
“We found $5,400 in cash and we also found a key to the business in question that Mr. Nelson had apparently come into possession of and was allegedly using to enter the business at night to steal the money.”
After executing the search warrant, Lowery said Nelson was picked up at his place of employment Monday afternoon and arrested on the charges. He was not accused of stealing from his employer, but rather another business in the city.
Nelson is currently in custody on a $2,500 bond.
