Retired Lt. Col. Harold Warren Barrett, Sr., 95, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Maitland, Fla., on May 5, 2013.
Warren was born June 11, 1917, in Russellville, where he met and married his sweetheart, Catherine “Toots” Barrett. They were happily married for 57 years until “Toots” passing in November 2002. Warren later met and married Marjorie Lavelle who he was married to until Marge’s passing in January 2013.
Warren admirably and honorably served his country in three wars. He flew 32 missions from June 15, 1944, to Aug. 30, 1944, during combat in WWII. He later returned to Germany with his family. During this tour he participated in the Berlin airlift flying almost daily for several weeks in a row.
Lt. Col Barrett retired from the USAF as a command pilot.
His greatest joy was serving his country and taking care of his family. The tough Colonel known as “Papa” to his grandchildren was always there for them and happy to lend a helping hand. He was a hero to his family and country.
He is survived by his children, Harold Barrett, Jr. and wife, Barbara, Charles Barrett and wife, Jessie, Robert Barrett, Cathy Nemitz and husband, Paul, Richard Barrett; his sister, Jean Hargett and husband, George, along with grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville, Fla.
