Students participate in RFD poster contest

During the month of October, students at Russellville Elementary School participated in a poster contest in conjunction with Fire Safety Month.

Russellville Fire Department firefighter Rhett Bradford said city fire marshal Steve Thornton came up with the idea of a poster contest to keep the students at the upper elementary school involved with the month’s activities.

“We always go to West Elementary School during Fire Safety Week and talk to the students there, but we wanted to find a way to keep the students who had already moved on to Russellville Elementary involved in our efforts to discuss fire safety,” Bradford said.

“Steve Thornton came up with the idea of having a poster contest and we modeled it around the theme from the NFPA website – preventing kitchen fires.

“Each student was offered the chance to draw a poster centered on this theme and submit it for judging. The top three posters were awarded a prize and the students’ teachers received a Wal-Mart gift card.”

Bradford said the following sponsors helped provide funds for the awards: Green’s Dependable Hardware, Campbell’s Vision Center, Family Pharmacy Group, K&K’s Sweet Temptations, Murray’s Tire and Alignment, Stephenson Electric Service, Wooten Chiropractic, Wal-Mart, Northside Grocery and Yogi’s FoodCo.
