Storms cause damage in Red Bay

RED BAY – A line of strong storms that formed ahead of the cold front that affected the North Alabama area this past weekend caused some damage to areas in the west end of the county early Friday morning.

According to Franklin County EMA director Roy Gober, there were multiple downed trees in the Red Bay area as well as power outages and other damage reported as a result of the storm that passed through the area about 1 a.m. Friday.

Red Bay councilman Brad Bolton said several trees close to the school appeared to have the tops “twisted off”.

“It definitely looks like there could have been more going on than just some strong winds,” Bolton said, “especially by the way a lot of these trees look.”

There was also some damage reported at Red Bay High School where the roof of the visitor’s dugout at the softball field was blown off and bleachers were blown through the fencing behind home plate.

Bolton said there were also some roofs that received damage, a local church had some of the metal blown off of it, and a tree fell on a home and caused some damage.

“We didn’t have any injuries reported, though, so we are thankful for that,” Bolton said.
