Eyes on the prize

The annual Red Bay Founders Day Festival took place Sept. 16 in Bay Tree Park, and many would agree it was well-attended.

A variety of food and craft vendors were on hand, and bands performed throughout the day. The contests of various types, however, might be the most-loved tradition of Founders Day. Winners were named in each contest, including photography, quilts, coloring, cooking, car show and buck dancing.

Winning Pies: 1st place, Mazie Nix, peach; 2nd place, M. Prince, pecan; 3rd place, Debbie Hammock, coconut cream; and Most Unique, Debbie Hammock, banana. Pie contest judges were Andrew Franks, Brenda Turbyfill and Mary Eastep.

  • Business Category – 1stplace, Betsy Jarnigan of Red Bay; 2nd place, Phillip Jarnigan of Red Bay; and 3rd place, Glenn Elrod of Vina.
  • Buildings Category – 1stplace, Cindy Orrick of Russellville; 2nd place, Wes Jarnigan of Red Bay; and 3rd place, Ponda Pharr of Tremont, Miss.
  • Historic Landmarks Category – 1stplace, Glenn Elrod of Vina; 2nd place, Cathy Jarnigan of Red Bay; and 3rd place, Ponda Pharr of Tremont, Miss.

Winning Buck Dance Contestants: 1st place, Roy Lucas of Vina; 2nd place, Charlotte Smith of Red Bay; and 3rd place, Tammy McCalpin of Saltillo, Miss.

Winning Cars:

  • Mayor Charlene Fancher announced her favorite car from the show for this year, a 1967 Chevy SS Camarro owned by Jonathan Hill.
  • Best Car: Darren Wallace.
  • Best Pickup: James Stockton, 1956 Ford F100 Pickup.
  • Best of Show: Tommy Davidson, 1955 Ford Crown Victoria.
  • Best Engine: Bobby Canup of Tremont, Miss, 1957 Chevy.
  • Best Interior: Lee Page
  • Best Paint: Jonathan Hill
  • Best Motorcycle: Mike Walters.

Winning Cooks:

  • Chicken: 1st place, Hogover; 2nd place, Bust; and 3rd place, Sticky Fingers.
  • Ribs: 1st place, Hogover; 2nd place, Blowin’ Smoke; and 3rd place, Bust.
  • Brisket: 1st place, Sticky Fingers; 2nd place, Hogover; and 3rd place, Doc’s Smoke and Barbeque.
  • Butts: 1st place, Blowin’ Smoke; 2nd place, Sticky Fingers; and 3rd place, Bust.
  • People’s Choice: Blowin’ Smoke
  • Open Division: 2nd place, Blowin’ Smoke; and 3rd place, Hogover.
  • Overall Winner: Sticky Fingers.
