RHS hosts kicking camp
By Brannon King / For the FCT
Summer is the season for camps, and one of the longest-running camps is Coach Mike King’s annual Shoals Kicking Camp, which is held at the Russellville High School Football Stadium.
This year, the camp will take place June 29, and it will include instruction for punters, place kickers – both conventional and soccer style – and snappers.
Cost is $125, but if three or more sign up from the same school, the fee will be $75 per camper. Lunch will be provided, and all campers get T-shirts.
Each year, the camp is led by King, who is the owner and operator of Shoals Kicking Development. His goal is to develop fundamentally-sound kickers, and he uses the “Doc Story” method of instruction. King worked with the late kicking expert Story for 10 years.
King is the kicking coach at UNA and has spent the past 29 years as a consultant with the Auburn and Georgia Tech kicking camps. He is also the on-field director of the Tiffin/Pope Kicking Camp at the University of Alabama. Additionally, he has also worked at a number of day camps in the South.
King’s camps have been endorsed by many recognizable names in the college football ranks, including Van Tiffin, Daniel Pope, Al Del Greco, Terry Bowden, David Cutcliffe, Bobby Wallace and Mark Hudspeth.
Coaches and parents are welcome at the camp. For more information, visit shoalskicking.org.
Enrollment is limited so that King can devote more personal attention to the basics. Campers should bring a football and be dressed to kick.
