Russellville Reads: Try one of these titles
The weather outside is cold and dreary, and you know what that means – it’s story time. As promised, I have two more amazing young adult titles for you to enjoy during the holiday season. If you haven’t had the privilege to read these amazing books, then stop by the library and check them out!
- “Dumplin’” by Julie Murphy
Willowdean, nicknamed “Dumplin’” by her mother and called “Will” by her friends, is an overweight teenager with a love for Dolly Parton. She has always felt comfortable with her body and confident in herself. She doesn’t care that her mother was a teen beauty queen or that people have poked fun at her for her weight.
But everything changes when she meets Bo. Suddenly Will is full of insecurities and fear of what others think. In order to prove her self-worth, Will decides to enter and win the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant. However, as the date of the pageant approaches, Will finds it’s not that easy to take part in a pageant – especially after her best friend Ellen decides to enter.
“Dumplin’” is set to premier in select theatres and on Netflix next month.
- “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han
This book follows the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it and hid it in a box under her bed. One day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh.
As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good might come out of these letters after all. This book has all the humor and melodrama of your favorite teen movies and romantic comedies. The film adaption is available on Netflix now and definitely worth a watch.
