Vina picks up first win against Phillips

The Vina Red Devils picked up a big win Friday night with an 8-7 victory over the Phillips Bears. The win ended a 12-game losing streak for the program.

“All the players played hard tonight,” said Vina head coach Ben Guin. “Our backs ran the ball hard. Elijah Whitfield, Malachi Fletcher and Braden Moomaw all had a good night running the ball for us. Our offensive line blocked extremely well, and the defense played a good, hard-fought game. I couldn’t be prouder of our guys tonight. We played together as a team.”

Fletcher scored the Red Devils’ touchdown on a breakaway 40-yard run for the score. Moomaw added the pivotal two-point conversion.

Phillips got its lone score on an end-around play and chose to settle for the extra point.

All the scoring occurred in the first half. The two defenses battled it out in the second half.

Vina hosts Cherokee Friday night.
