Red Devil girls pick up first win of season
The Vina Red Devils rallied from a halftime deficit to a big 44-39 win over Sulligent last week.
Vina trailed the Blue Devils 17-12 at halftime but outscored Sulligent 32-22 in the second half to claim the win.
The rally was led by Rayleigh Guin and Kaitlyn Athey. Guin scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the second half, going six for eight from the free-throw line. Athey scored nine of her 10 points in the second half.
Kaitlyn King added seven points, Abbie Petree six points, Sara Scott four points, Sarah Johnson three points and Hailey Cantrell one point.
Guin dished off five assists, and Petree grabbed 12 rebounds.
Vina falls to Marion County in tournament
The Lady Red Devils reached the finals of the Vina Invitational Saturday but fell to the Marion County Red Raiders 45-44, finishing runner-up.
Vina led Marion County 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Red Raiders tied the game up 25-25 at halftime. The game was still deadlocked 34-34 going into the fourth quarter before Marion County got the one-point win.
Scott led Vina with 15 points. Guin followed with 13 points.
In the semifinals, Vina beta Waterloo 52-35. The Red Devils led 33-21 at the half and 40-28 going into the fourth quarter, where they cruised to an easy win.
Athey led Vina against Waterloo with 15 points, hitting three three-pointers, going five for six from the free-throw line and tallying six assists. Johnson scored 13 points.
In the quarterfinals, Vina beat Shoals Christian 53-25. The Red Devils held a 20-point lead at halftime 33-13. Guin led Vina with 19 points, going nine for 10 from the free-throw line. King followed with 15 points, hitting three three-pointers in the first half.
