Russellville's Briana Ramirez prepares to make a play on the serve of an opponent during the 2019 season.

Russellville’s Ramirez to play volleyball for MUW

Russellville High School senior Briana Ramirez has announced she will continue her volleyball career as a member of the Mississippi University for Women Owls.

After graduating from RHS, Ramirez will be heading to Columbus, Miss., to play at the next level after being a leader on the court as a Golden Tiger.

Ramirez is the career digs leader in Russellville history with 1,785 and has the most in a season at RHS with 656 in 2017. She also picked up 116 aces during her high school playing days. In 2019 Ramirez had 375 digs, 22 assists and 19 aces, and on 487 serve receive attempts, she had 34 errors.

“Briana is a hard worker,” said Russellville head coach Whitney Glover. “She has a great attitude, and she shows up to every practice ready to do what is needed to improve herself as well as the team.”

Ramirez has also played club volleyball with Level Elite for four years, and Glover said she believes that commitment has helped Ramirez become a great, well-rounded player.

At RHS Ramirez starred as a libero, which can be considered the leader of the defense – a role that fits her just fine. “Briana can play any position I ask her to, but she is an amazing defensive player,” Glover shared. “Being a libero is one of the most difficult positions, and you don’t often get much credit. She played with heart and passion in every game, and I’m so glad that I got the chance to coach her.”

Ramirez is a multi-sport standout at Russellville. During the abbreviated spring season, she could be found on defense in front of the net as a talented goalkeeper on the soccer team. In July 2019 she played in the AHSAA North-South All Star game that was held in Montgomery.
