Tharptown: Boys get OT win over Colbert Heights, girls narrowly top Belgreen

BOYS

Tharptown 60, Colbert Heights 57

The Tharptown Wildcat boys overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the Colbert Heights Wildcats to overtime and win 60-57.

Trailing 43-33 at the end of the third quarter, Tharptown outscored Colbert Heights 20-10 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Point guard Malachi Minor, a sophomore, led Tharptown’s comeback with eight fourth-quarter points.

Sophomore Dylan Valdez scored six of Tharptown’s seven overtime points to lead the Wildcats to the home win.

Valdez ended the game with 19 points to lead Tharptown. He was followed by Edwin Vela with 13 points and Minor with 12 points. Blake Daily added seven points, Alexis Quezada five points, Luis Valdez two points and Tyler Amos two points.

GIRLS

Tharptown 27, Belgreen 26

The Tharptown Wildcat girls had to scratch and claw to win their sixth straight game over in-county opponents with a sloppy 27-26 victory over the Belgreen Bulldogs.

The game was tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Belgreen took a 19-15 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, however, there seemed to be a lid on the goal, with both teams struggling to score. Tharptown outscored Belgreen 6-4 in the third quarter to cut Belgreen’s lead to 23-21. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 6-3 to get the win in the last minute of the game.

Savanna Romans led Tharptown with 11 points. She was followed by Autumn Montgomery with eight points, Gracie Montgomery with six points and Kaitlyn Simmons with two points.

Carson Hovater and Noelle Willingham led Belgreen with eight points and seven points, respectively. Dacota Green added five points, B.B. Scott three points and Alayna Tate three points.
