Tharptown sweeps Shoals Christian for Senior Night success

The Tharptown Wildcats swept Shoals Christian on Senior Night at Tharptown. The varsity girls beat the Flame 57-37, and varsity boys won 62-46.

In the varsity girls game, Tharptown dominated the second quarter of play to pull away from Shoals Christian.

Sarah Mansell scored nine first-quarter points to help Tharptown keep pace with Shoals Christian early on.  The two teams were tied 13-13 at the end of the first period of play.

The Wildcats outscored the Flame 23-4 in the second quarter to pull away to a 36-17 halftime lead. Gracie Montgomery hit two three-pointers and scored 10 points in the second quarter, while her sister Autumn Montgomery scored six points.

Tharptown cruised to the win in the second half.

Mansell led Tharptown with 19 points, followed by Gracie Montgomery with 16 points and Autumn Montgomery with 11 points. Savannah Romans added six points, Alyssa Abbott three points and Kaitlyn Simmons two points.

In the varsity boys game, Tharptown outscored Shoals Christian in all four quarter to pick up the 62-46 win.

Tharptown led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime. The Wildcats extended their lead to 43-31 by the end of the third quarter and outscored the Flame 19-15 in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

Edwin Vela led Tharptown with 14 points, followed by Dylan Valdez with 13 points and Malachi Minor with 10 points. Blake Daily added nine points, Alexis Quezada seven points, Luis Valdez five points and Tyler Amos four points.

Tharptown 47, Danville 44

The Tharptown girls also beat Class 3A Danville 47-44 in overtime this past week to close out their regular season.

Senior Gracie Montgomery went eight-for-eight from the free-throw stripe, including making two to send the game into overtime. Montgomery made all four of her free throws in overtime to help the Wildcats to the win.

Danville held a slim 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Tharptown came back to take an 18-15 halftime lead. Danville cut Tharptown’s lead to 27-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Trailing by two as time was running out, a technical foul was called on Danville for trying to call a timeout with possession of the ball. Montgomery calmly stepped to the line and made both free throws to send the game into overtime.

Mansell led Tharptown with 17 points, followed by Autumn Montgomery with 14 points and Gracie Montgomery with 12 points. Romans added three points and Simmons one point.
