The Red Bay City Council discussed the status of the vacant position on the Red Bay Water and Gas Board during its regular meeting June 1.

Mayor Charlene Fancher explained she was happy to report the water and gas board met the previous evening and passed a resolution, which she read aloud during the council meeting, to amend its certificate of incorporation. The amendment removes a paragraph containing a provision stating that none of the members of the water and gas board of directors shall be an officer of the town of Red Bay.

It further states that the board has determined it would be in the best interests of both the board and the city to allow one member of the Red Bay City Council to serve as a member of the board while serving their term as council member “in order to facilitate communications and foster goodwill between the parties.”

The resolution also calls for the corporate power of the water and gas board to be exercised by a board of directors consisting of five members, that being the maximum and minimum number. It continued, stating the members of the board of directors will be elected by the governing body of the City of Red Bay.

The council voted to approve acceptance of the resolution.

“So, at this point, we will move forward into amending the certificate of incorporation,” said Fancher.

At the next meeting, the council will discuss the matter of appointing someone to the Board, as well as approve the amended certificate of incorporation.

In other business, Fancher presented the council’s opportunity to help fund a portion of the Red Bay High School football field project, noting the Board of Education will supply $400,000 toward the project.

“Our outlay would be around $501,500, which is in line with what we had talked about in prior discussions,” Fancher said.

The council voted in favor of approving the payment – one half from the education fund and getting a loan for the remaining balance.

Fancher said the expectation is for the project to be finished before football season but at least no later than the end of October.

The next meeting of the Red Bay City Council will be June 15, with the work session starting at 3 p.m. and the meeting starting at 3:30 p.m. Meetings are held in Red Bay City Hall.
