Vina Red Devils see later start to season with Aug. 26 opener

The Vina Red Devils will have more of a traditional football schedule than any other team in Franklin County this year. The Red Devils’ schedule hearkens back to a day when football started at a more normal time than mid-August. Vina has open weeks Aug. 19 and Sept. 2, with an opener squeezed in between Aug. 26 against Addison.

VINA AT ADDISON

Vina’s road opener Aug. 26 is by no stretch an easy one. The Red Devils haven’t played the traditionally big and strong Addison Bulldogs since 2011, when they lost 67-6. The two teams have matched up 19 times, with Vina winning three.

VINA VS. SHOALS CHRISTIAN

After an open date Labor Day weekend, Vina plays its home opener Sept. 9, hosting Shoals Christian.

Vina has a historical record of 4-16 against the Flame and lost this game 30-22 this past year. This will be Vina’s homecoming game.

VINA AT WOODVILLE

Vina will go back on the road Sept. 16, traveling to Woodville. These two teams have played teacher twice; the last time they played was in 2015, and the Red Devils won easily, 56-6.

VINA VS. CURRY

In September 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president of the United States, Winston Churchill was prime minister of the United Kingdom, Adolf Hitler was ravaging Europe, the Great Smoky National Park was dedicated, CBS became a television station – and it was the last time Vina and Curry played a football game.

The Red Devils and Yellow Jackets will play at Vina Sept. 13. Vina won that epic contest 82 years ago 13-6.

VINA AT PHILLIPS

Sept. 30 Vina will travel to Bear Creek to play Phillips.

This is Vina’s second-oldest series. The two teams have played 62 times. Phillips holds a 45-17 record against Vina. The Bears won this past year 47-6.

VINA AT CHEROKEE

Vina will travel to Cherokee Oct. 7. The Red Devils lost this game this past year 16-6. Vina’s record against the Indians is 8-13-1.

VINA VS. MEEK

Oct. 14 Vina will host Meek. The last time these two teams were pitted against each other was in 2017, when Vina lost 47-14. The Red Devils are 8-12-2 historically against the Tigers.

VINA VS. HACKLEBURG

Oct. 21 Vina will host Hackleburg. This is Vina’s longest-running series.

Vina and Hackleburg have played each other 69 times. Vina has won nine of those games.

Hackleburg won this game this past year 44-20.

VINA VS. WATERLOO

Vine will close out the regular season Oct. 28, hosting Waterloo. The Red Devils and the Cougars have played each other 46 times, with Vina holding a 27-19 series edge. The Cougars won this game this past year 46-0.
