PC senior signs for college basketball

Phil Campbell senior basketball player Canaan Clay has signed a basketball scholarship with Welch College.

Welch College is a private, Freewill Baptist-affiliated school located in Gallatin, Tenn. It is part of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

“I want to thank God for the opportunity to play at the next level,” said Clay. “I also want to thank my parents for pushing me to be the very best I can be. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to play college basketball at Welch College.

Clay has a career average of 10.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. He has totaled 801 points and 555 rebounds throughout his high school career.

Clay’s father Shane has been his head coach throughout his high school career. “I am really excited for Canaan to take his skills and abilities and have the opportunity to play to the next level,” he said. “This is really good exposure for our school and basketball program.

“Canaan is a true example of a student-athlete, excelling on and off the court with a 3.9 grade point average,” the coach/father added. “He has really worked hard, being in the gym each morning at 6:30 a.m. to better himself.
