Phil Campbell, Tharptown tune-up for openers

The Phil Campbell Bobcats and Tharptown Wildcats met each other for a preseason game last Friday night to get ready for their season openers this week. Preseason games are used to work the kinks out. Make mistakes and learn from them. Get used to game speed. See how personnel react to adversity.

Although the score was lopsided, both teams could come away from the game with lessons learned and mistakes that need to be corrected.

“I thought we had fun and played well,” said Phil Campbell coach Jacob Hamilton. “We will have to play much better against Hackleburg and into the season to achieve our goals.”

Phil Campbell scored twice in the first quarter and four times in the second to build up a 40-0 halftime lead.  The Bobcats added two more scores to make it 57-0 before the Wildcats got  on the board late in the fourth quarter.

Gage Baker and Hayston Scott scored on long runs of 31 and 51 yards in the first quarter.

Baker scored again at the beginning of the second quarter on a 30-yard run. Scott capped off the first half, scoring with a 47-yard run. Noah Raper scored on a 65-yard run, and Braxton Mayfield on a one-yard run.

Scott got the Bobcats lone touchdown in the third quarter on a 24-yard run.The freshman finished the game with five carries, three for touchdowns and 140 yards of rushing. He also completed four of six passes for 90 yards.

Koltin Hester and Hagan Raper added fourth quarter touchdown runs for Phil Campbell on runs of 25 and 39 yards.
