The Memory Tree has become just that after it was cut down Friday.
The 10-year-old tree that stood at the Doughboy Monument in downtown Meridian had been struck by lightning last month and efforts to save it were unsuccessful.
Meridian-area residents often hung yellow ribbons on the tree to honor American veterans. Meridian officials have not determined if another tree will be planted in its place.
Wood and leaves from the tree will be saved. Pennebaker is seeking suggestions what to do with them.
The foundation also will look for another tree around town to serve as the new Memory Tree.
