The public has responded well to this summer's blood shortage, but United Blood Services of Mississippi is still short of its goal to keep at least a three-day supply on hand.
Bob Murray, UBS community relations director, said there is about a day's supply of blood in stock.
He said travel over the Labor Day weekend increases the chance of accidents and victims who might need blood.
A drive held Wednesday at Meridian Community College brought in some much-needed blood. United Blood Services surpassed its goal of 45 units with donations from MCC students and staff.
Timothy Cole, 20, a freshman who began classes at MCC this semester, was one of the donors. He said he has given blood regularly since he was a high school sophomore.
United Blood Services has held blood drives all over Meridian this summer.
Because 1 pint of blood can be separated into several different components, one donation can save as many of three people.
Donors must be 17 years old and in good health. Once blood is given, it takes about 48 hours before it can be tested and used.
HERE'S YOUR CHANCE
Another blood drive will be held Friday at United Blood Services, 1115 25th Ave. Donors who come in between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. will receive a free car wash and a pint of Blue Bell ice cream.
