Woman killed in weekend crash

SPRUCE PINE – A Franklin County woman died from injuries sustained during a wreck that occurred Friday afternoon on U.S. 43 in Spruce Pine.

Carol Ann Edgil, 72, passed away shortly after the wreck occurred, authorities said.

Officials said Carol Ann Edgil was transported from the scene of the accident but died as a result of her injuries while she was en route to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

Carol Ann Edgil’s husband, Jerry Wayne Edgil, 71, was critically injured in the accident and was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

According to the Alabama State Troopers Huntsville Post, the crash occurred Friday at 3:18 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 43 and Alabama 13 at the top of Spruce Pine Mountain.

Troopers stated the 2001 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Jerry Edgil collided with a 2012 Volkswagon Jetta driven by Shaun Wilson, 20, of Anchorage, Alaska.

Officials said Wilson was not injured in the crash.

Jerry Edgil is a well-known radio personality on the gospel station WBTG out of Sheffield.

He is also the pastor of Atwood Missionary Baptist Church in Franklin County.

“Jerry Edgil is one of those people that just about everyone in the area has heard of,” said Larry Dover, director of missions for the Franklin County Baptist Association.

“I’ve listened to Jerry many times on the radio and he has such an outgoing personality. He treated everyone he met like an old friend.

“Our prayers go out to him for a full recovery and for the loss of his wife, Carol Ann. Everyone who knew them talked about what wonderful people they both were and I know she will be missed.”

As of Tuesday, Jerry Edgil was listed in serious condition in Huntsville Hospital’s surgical intensive care unit, a spokeswoman said.
