Red Bay sweeps Haleyville
All three Red Bay varsity basketball teams took down 4A Haleyville last week, with the varsity boys winning 53-41, the varsity girls winning 45-44 in overtime and the B-varsity boys winning 38-19.
In the varsity boys game, Gath Weatherford was hot from beyond the three-point arch, hitting six three-pointers, five of which came in the third quarter.
Red Bay jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and led 24-15 at halftime. The Tigers extended their lead to 43-26 in the third quarter. Haleyville outpaced Red Bay in the fourth quarter 15-10, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the hot-shooting Tigers.
Weatherford led Red Bay with 20 points. He was the only Tiger in double figures. Braden Ray and Arden Hamilton scored eight points each. Clay Allison followed with seven points, Noah Brewer with six points and Jalen Vinson with four points.
In varsity girls action, Reagan Kuykendall scored 17 points, including all four of Red Bay’s overtime points, to help the Tigers to a 45-44 overtime win.
Haleyville led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Red Bay stormed back to take a 21-19 lead at halftime. Red Bay extended the lead to 32-27 at the end of the third quarter, but Haleyville outscored Red Bay 14-9 in the fourth quarter to tie the game 41-41 and send it into overtime.
Red Bay outscored Haleyville 4-3 in overtime to get the win.
Mallori Miller followed Kuykendall in the scoring column with 13 points. Destiny McCollister added eight points, Cassidy Kuykendall four points, Kaylee Markham two points and Macy Faulkner one point.
In the B-varsity boys game, Red Bay defeated Haleyville 38-19, with Alex Kennedy leading the way for the Tigers with 10 points.
