PCHS tops Phillips to close season
The Phil Campbell Bobcats went on the road Saturday to close out the regular season with a 56-51 win over the Phillips Bears. The win marked the end of a tough week on the road for the Bobcats as they head into post-season play.
“We played some tough competition this week,” said Phil Campbell Coach Craig Thomas. “We want this heading into the postseason. We need to be playing at a high level over the next couple of weeks if we want to reach our goals.”
Phil Campbell is an easy favorite to win the area, but to get to and through regionals will require a stepped-up level of play.
“We haven’t played that great lately, but we’ve shown some signs this week,” said Thomas. “We have a lot we have to improve on over the next few days.”
Katie Thomas led the Bobcats past the Bears with 20 points. Thomas made two three-pointers and went seven for 11 from the free-throw line.
Phil Campbell led after a high-scoring first quarter 23-17 and extended the lead to 37-30 at halftime.
Neither team could knock a shot down in the third quarter, scoring five points each.
The Bears tried to mount a comeback in the finial period, but the Bobcats held them off and secured the win.
Caitlyn Mills added 12 points on three makes behind the arch. Kallie Allen finished with 11 points and had two first-quarter three-pointers.
Olivia Taylor and Faith Cook added five points each. Kenner Scott finished with three points, and Kaycee Harris chipped in one point.
