Tharptown boys rack up big win

Winston Nolen scored 30 points to help the Tharptown Wildcats hang on and beat Athens Bible last week at Athens, 56-55.

Nolen hit five threepointers and scored 16 points in the first half and 14 in the second half.

Tharptown led by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, but Athens Bible went on a run late in the game and had a final shot to win that fell short of the goal.

Athens Bible led Tharptown 22-16 at the end of the first quarter, but Tharptown cut the lead to 34-30 by halftime. Tharptown outscored Athens Bible 12-7 in the third quarter to take a 42-41 lead into the final period of play.

The Wildcats hit 10 threepointers in the game, including two by Dylan Valdez, who scored 12 points, and two by Hayden Moss, who scored six points.

Luis Valdez and Edwin Vela scored three points each. Colton Simmons added two points.

Tharptown 70, Hackleburg 38

Tharptown put away the Hackleburg Panthers early Monday night, winning 70-38.

Nolen scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter to help the Wildcats build a 21-5 lead. Tharptown extended the lead to 36-17 at halftime and pushed the lead to 55-29 by the end of the third quarter.

Following Nolen, Dylan Valdez had 15 points, Luis Valdez had 12 points, and Moss added 11 points.  Rounding out the scoring, Vela had seven points, and Simmons got four points.

Clements 60, Tharptown 37

The Clements Colts used a 25point third quarter to blow past the Tharptown Wildcats last week and win 60-37.

Clements led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and 24-16 at halftime. After the explosive third quarter run, the Colts led the Wildcats 49-24.

Nolen led Tharptown with 15 points. He was followed by Moss with eight points, Simmons and Dylan Valdez with six points each and Luis Valdez with two points.
