NW-SCC baseball splits four games during busy week of action

The Patriots, under head coach David Langston, have a challenging schedule for the 2023 season, and the squad is off to a 5-11 start. Here are the results of recent games:

Northwest-Shoals 10, Freed-Hardeman JV 4

Northwest-Shoals got three runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 1-0 deficit on the way to victory Feb. 21.

Alex Wilson had a home run and two RBIs for the Patriots. Garrett Day had two doubles and three RBIs. Taylor Bush added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Preston McAlexander had two hits and two RBIs, and Grayson Thorpe had a walk, an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs.

Also hitting safely for the Patriots were Caleb Davis, Herlan Duran, Eli Gipson, Logan James and BenMichael Bennett. Duran’s hit was a double.

Cason Henry got the start on the mound. He was followed by Ethan Muncher, Cade Prestegard and Jacob Little.

Coastal Alabama South 6, Northwest Shoals 5

The Patriots went to Coastal Alabama in Bay Minette and fell in a close battle Feb. 24. Coastal Alabama got five runs after the fifth inning of the nine-inning contest.

Taylor Bush had a home run and a double for NW-SCC. Gipson and Davis had two hits each, and they were joined in the hit column by Wilson, Strachan, Prestegard and Drew McBurnett.

Additional Patriot RBIs came from Strachan, Gipson and Prestegard.

Pitchers for NW-SCC were Michael Pfeiffer and Samuel Pace.

Northwest-Shoals 11, Coastal Alabama South 5

Northwest Shoals trailed 3-1 after three innings but came on strong late to get the win. The Patriots had nine hits, with Taylor Bush hitting another home run and also picking up a single and three RBIs. Brodie Holcomb and Davis both doubled and drove in runs. Nick Smith and Wilson added hits and RBIs, while Strachan, Prestegard and McAlexander also had singles.

Ethan Muncher and Zach Hill pitched, with Hill getting the start and win. Hill pitched five innings, and Muncher worked two innings, allowing no hits or runs.

Chipola 15, Northwest-Shoals 3

The second game of the day Feb. 25 didn’t go as well as the first for the Patriots.

Cole Strachan homered for the only NW-SCC hit. Strachan had two RBIs, and McBurnett added another.

Former Russellville teammates Nick Smith and Eli Gipson each scored a run. Smith walked twice, and Gipson drew one free pass, as did McBurnett.

Pitchers for Northwest-Shoals were Bryce Sanders, Emitt Green, Prestegard and Muncher.
