Flora Sumrall of Shubuta received the East Mississippi Manufacturers Association and Mississippi Manufacturers Association inaugural vocational education scholarship.
The MMA/EMMA scholarship was created under the leadership of former MMA President Greg Robinson, president of Robinson Chemical Coatings in Meridian.
Following his tenure as MMA president, Robinson was instrumental in forming a regional scholarship program with the two manufacturing associations.
The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a vocational education student at one of the area's three community colleges East Mississippi Community College, East Central Community College or Meridian Community College.
After a demanding application process, the EMMA Scholarship Committee chose Sumrall who will begin her sophomore year at MCC next fall. Sumrall is a graduate of Quitman High School and lives in Shubuta.
She is married to David Sumrall and they have one daughter, Delysia.
Sumrall was employed for 16 years at Burlington Industries in Stonewall until the plant closed last year. At Burlington, Sumrall worked as a forklift operator and quality control clerk.
Before enrolling at MCC, Sumrall had been out of school for 20 years.
Sumrall is currently enrolled in the Business Office Technology Program with emphasis in Medical Office Technology. She currently has a 3.98 grade point average.
Sumrall describes herself as "highly energetic, inquisitive, resourceful, and diligent."
She is a member of Phi Beta Lambda and a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She placed third in the state competition for Medical Terminology and earned honorable mention in the MCC Literary Review for an original essay.
