Nearly 70 competitors are expected to take part in the track and field portion of the State Games of Mississippi this weekend.
The competition will take place Saturday at Meridian Community College's Track and Field Complex. The junior meet, for ages 16-under will begin at 8 a.m., with adult meeting beginning at 3 p.m.
Track and Field Commissioner Kevin Stephen, assistant track and field Coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, said he expects over 65 people to compete in this year's event. The event is broken down into age groups, allowing competitors of all ages to have a chance to earn medals.
The adult meet will encompass 16 events, including the 100, 200, and 400 meter dash, the long jump and high jump. Other track and field events included among all age groups in the State Games are the 800 and 1600 meter race, the shot put, triple jump, pole vault, discus, 100 meter hurdle, 110 meter hurdle, and 300 meter hurdle.
Each track and field event will comply with USAT&F rules, and teams must consist of 10 or more athletes. Individual competitors are welcome.
Olympic Medalist Willye White will serve as honorary commissioner for this year's event.
