Scanning the sports scene on a sunny Sunday while wondering whatever happened to Debbie Brock …
It's that time of year again.
On Friday night the fireworks and music filled the air as the State Games of Mississippi officially opened. On Saturday thousands of athletes, both young and old, competed in various events at venues all over Meridian.
This is the 12th edition of the State Games of Mississippi, and it never gets old to me.
Congratulations go out to the athletes who competed in the events this weekend and two weekends ago, as well as those who will take part in next weekend's action.
But I also tip my hat to the State Games of Mississippi staff and the many volunteers that help pull this massive event together. It just never ceases to amaze me.
We at The Meridian Star hope that you enjoy the coverage of the State Games this weekend and next, as well as the countless other stories that have been written in preparation for this event.
To the local athletes who take part in the State Games, thank you for supporting an event that is very important to this community. To those of you who traveled from all corners of the state to be with us, thank you as well. For without you the State Games of Mississippi would not be what it is the state's premier athletic festival.
Needing a little help
July is staring me in the face, which means that it's about time for youth baseball and softball all-star tournaments to begin.
All leagues are encouraged to report the dates of their tournaments to The Meridian Star. Also, a complete roster of all of the all-star teams would be appreciated. We will run those as we receive them. Team photos are also welcomed.
All youth organizations Babe Ruth, Dizzy Dean, Dixie Youth, Dixie Boys, Dixie Majors, Little League of America, and any other competitive leagues are asked for their help in covering the upcoming events.

Golf schedules requested
I also encourage each of the local golf clubs and courses to fax a copy of their tournament schedules to 485-1207.
The tournament directors are also asked to fax in their final results. We would love to run them in the paper the week following the event. If you have an event that you feel requires in person coverage from the star, then just give me a call at 485-1203 and let's discuss it.
Also, it's important to us to report the results when local golfers compete elsewhere. Just fax or e-mail the information in and include a contact number.
Racing is at its peak
It's hard to go to a county in East Mississippi on a weekend and not find an auto racing event going on.
Whether it's top-flight dirt-track racing at the Queen City Speedway, go-kart racing at Causeyville Raceway, mud-bogging in Wayne County or drag racing at several local strips, there is always something going on.
The Meridian Star is very interested in these events and would love to share the results with our readers. So please e-mail or fax then in to us.
Also I am going to begin writing a racing notebook that will run at least once a week and would love to include interesting tidbits of information about local racers, whether they compete locally or somewhere else in the Southeast.

The Star's interest in local athletes, teams and sports is not limited to racing, golf, softball and baseball. If you play it, we are interested.
We are fortunate to have outstanding tennis players, runners and swimmers in this area, as well as top-flight competitors in many other sports.
We would love the opportunity to give them the coverage they deserve.
