It took four extra holes, but the team of David Hopper, Judge Little, Tommy Little, Randy Poole, Chuck Rea, and John Rea won the 2003 Buddy McGhee six-person tournament late Sunday afternoon at Briarwood Country Club.
They had birdies on the first two playoff holes, an eagle on the third, and a tournament-winning birdie on the fourth extra hole.
The winners finished tied with the team of Jon Hamm, Tony Nelson, Jeff Rainey, Kevin Stone, Frankie Wagner, and Marcus Willis at the end of regulation. Both teams finished 36 holes of regulation 39 strokes under par.
The Hamm, Nelson, Rainey, Stone, Wagner, and Willis team shot a 19-under par 53 Sunday to pull even with the eventual champions. The runners-up had eagles on two par-5s Nos. 4 and 12 to go with birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
The winning team had two eagles Nos. 4 and 15 to go with birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18.
Money from the tournament goes to the American Cancer Society.
Third place went to the team of Rodney Scarborough, Sammy Broadhead, Mac Barnes, Paul Entrekin, Rusty Perkins, and Herb Bruister with a two-day 108. They closed with a 55 on Sunday.
In fourth place was the team of Don Bounds, Benji Carpenter, Kim Eubanks, Shaun Eubanks, Al Tynes, and Jason Anders with a 109.
