Members of the East Mississippi Master Gardeners are taking steps to make sure a horticulture student at Meridian Community College hits pay dirt.
EMMG's 80 members are underwriting a $100 monthly assistantship for a student in the college's Horticulture Technology Program, said Kathy Brookshire, director of institutional development at MCC.
Gail Barton, coordinator of the Horticulture Technology Program, said the recipient of this working scholarship will be required to work a minimum of four hours a week at the college's greenhouse and nursery. In addition, the student will coordinate the production and delivery of plants grown by the MCC Horticulture Club for the EMMG annual spring plant sale.
EMMG President Michelina Hamilton also credited the support of Steve Strong, area horticulture specialist with the Lauderdale County Extension Service.
