Lanelle Luckett Glover of Meridian, a former teacher at Meridian High School, was appointed by Gov. Ronnie Musgrove on Thursday to the nine-member Mississippi Board of Education.
Glover will represent the 1st Supreme Court District of Mississippi, an area that includes the central part of the state. She will complete the term of A.M. Zeidman of Brandon, who resigned.
Glover's term will expire June 30, 2007.
The Mississippi Board of Education functions much like a city or county school board but on a much larger level. The state board approves state education policies and works with issues of accountability.
The nine members serve staggered terms and are appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the state House of Representatives. The board holds regular monthly meetings in Jackson.
Musgrove praised Glover's experience.
Glover said she has a lot to learn about how the Mississippi Board of Education functions but she believes she is up to the challenge.
While at Meridian High, Glover taught government, economics, law related studies and sociology; she was coordinator of youth programs. Before teaching in Meridian, she taught at Holly Springs Elementary School.
Glover served on the Mississippi Research and Development Center Advisory Council for former Gov. William Winter from 1980-1984. She received an Excellence in Teaching Award at Meridian Public Schools in 1999 and was selected as a STAR teacher from Meridian High in 1995.
She currently serves as a board member of the Lauderdale County Habitat for Humanity, is on the Education Committee of the East Mississippi Business Development Corp., is a member of Parents for Public Schools and is the administrative council chairperson with Central United Methodist Church.
She lives in Meridian with her husband, attorney Wingfield Glover.
