The smell of funnel cakes, cotton candy and corn dogs can only mean one thing the fair is in town. All week, kids and adults of all ages visited the Queen City Fair at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center for food, fun and rides.
The fair also offers several unique games and one of the most unusual games has been around since the 1940's. It involves a kangaroo rat, a spinning wheel and a bell.
The conductor of the game said he chose the kangaroo rat because it is smarter than the average rat.
Guenzler said he has traveled the fair circuit for seven years and enjoys meeting different people. He also said Herbie and his mate, Rosco, are a big draw wherever they go.
The Queen City Fair lasts until Sunday and Len McRae, the fair's organizer, said this year's event has been the best ever.
McRae said he did not know exactly how many people have attended this year's fair, but the increased participation of the Meridian 4H Club has contributed to the fair's expansion.
If games involving rodents or rides like the Tornado, the Terminator or the Ali Baba don't sound like fun, don't give up, the Queen City Fair has something for everyone.
McRae said the Banana Derby where monkeys race ponies has been very popular this year as has Arneberg's Super Dog Show, featuring dogs that perform circus tricks.
But the kids said they came to the fair specifically for the rides.
Moore's friends, Bliss Keller and Ashley Humphries, said their favorite ride is the YoYo Swings.
Humphries said she likes the fair so much, she has been twice this year.
